The Zeiss PALM Microdissection system can be used to extract selected areas or even single cells out of tissue samples or cell cultures: the user defines an area of interest in the sample using an interactive screen. A UV laser (355 nm) will dissect this area with high precision (< 1 µm) out of the sample, and a short laser puls (1 ns) will catapult it contact-free into a reaction tube. The isolated sample is now ready for further treatment.
Laser Microdissection can be used e.g. to isolate DNA and RNA from defined tissue areas or to isolate and re-cultivate cell clones out of living cell cultures.
